Cesar Cui (1835-1918): composer and music cric. A member of the ‘Mighty Handful’. He was born in today’s Lithuania, at the time part of Imperial Russia.
Cui became an Engineer for the Russian Imperial Army and later taught lessons on fortifications in military academies.
Originally an admirer of Chopin, he was then influenced by Balakirev.
Cui remained a musical amateur.
As a critic he supported the nationalist style of Russian music.
MY FAVOURITE WORKS:
-Sonata for piano and violin (1870)
-Kaleidscope for piano and violin (1893) [it includes the Orientale, though it is better suited in the orchestral version]
-Cinq petite duos, Op. 56 (1897)
-My soul magnifies the Lord
